{"id":38311,"date":"2021-11-22T10:13:39","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T15:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/?post_type=news&#038;p=38311"},"modified":"2021-11-22T10:24:40","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T15:24:40","slug":"joshua-agterberg-best-presentation-nonparametric-statistics","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/news\/joshua-agterberg-best-presentation-nonparametric-statistics\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctoral student wins award for best presentation at ASA&#8217;s Nonparametric Statistics Student Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A doctoral student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/\">Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics<\/a> took top honors for his presentation at the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.amstat.org\/nonparametricstatisticssection\/paper-awards\">American Statistical Association\u2019s recent Nonparametric Statistics Student Competition.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jagterberg.github.io\/\">Joshua Agterberg<\/a>, whose work focuses on theoretical problems in data science and statistics, won for his presentation on <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Farxiv.org%2Fabs%2F2012.09828&amp;data=04%7C01%7Clde%40jhu.edu%7C734b3a00781847269e2b08d9a5ebad3b%7C9fa4f438b1e6473b803f86f8aedf0dec%7C0%7C0%7C637723253897437908%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=lxmEIYMUPvy664LdLKtBg01zS4oJlmHS9A4LxuhZbLc%3D&amp;reserved=0\">\u201cNonparametric Two-Sample Hypothesis Testing for Random Graphs with Negative and Repeated Eigenvalues,\u201d<\/a> which tackles the problem of determining whether two networks (with different vertices) have the same distribution. Co-authors on the paper were Minh Tang of North Carolina State University and <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/carey-priebe\/\">Carey Priebe<\/a>, a professor of applied mathematics and statistics and Agterberg\u2019s adviser.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38315\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38315\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38315\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/joshua-agterberg-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/joshua-agterberg-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/joshua-agterberg-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/joshua-agterberg-555x740.jpg 555w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/joshua-agterberg.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joshua Agterberg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAn example where this would be useful is determining whether two social networks have the same connectivity properties: for example, if you have snapshots of two different Facebook friendship networks (with maybe different people in each network) at different times, you may want to determine if these two different networks have the same types of connectivity,\u201d said the Milwaukee native, who earned his bachelor\u2019s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation was so successful, Agterberg believes, because he not only geared it to a general statistics audience, but also focused on how the problem in question is different from related classical statistics problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to convey how our theoretical results overcome these difficulties without going into too much detail. I wanted to keep my presentation short and sweet, so I mostly just emphasized how certain classical assumptions break down for this problem,\u201d said Agterberg. \u201cAnd while our paper is primarily theoretical, our procedure can more or less be used \u2018out of the box\u2019 for generic network data, making it readily applicable to essentially any scientific or engineering problem that has to do with comparing two networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cBest Presentation\u201d honor comes in the wake of another: Agterberg also just learned that he won the <a href=\"https:\/\/imstat.org\/2021\/04\/20\/recipients-of-the-2021-ims-hannan-graduate-student-travel-awards-announced\/\">2021 Institute of Mathematical Statistics\u2019 Hannan Graduate Student Travel Award,<\/a> which provides money for travel to any IMS-sponsored or co-sponsored meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Agterberg is an <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/teaching-fellows-program\/\">AMS Teaching Fellow<\/a> currently instructing a one-credit course, \u201cStatistics and Data Science with Networks,\u201d for first- and second-year engineering students.\u00a0 This research was also supported in part by a fellowship from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minds.jhu.edu\/\">Mathematical Institute of Data Science<\/a>
