A variety of research, study and learning experiences are available for undergraduate and gradate students.<\/p>\n
These can be<\/em><\/p>\n and can involve<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n or combinations thereof.\u00a0 The selection of students for these positions will be determined by the students’ interest and experience.<\/p>\n Opportunities for Students<\/strong><\/p>\n Multi-antenna Wireless Communications<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Opportunities exist for students to demonstrate the construction of a testbed for “MIMO” (multi-input, multi-output) wireless communications using software-designed radio (SDR) methods.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Work can involve wireless channel measurements, C++ programming, and building a large SDR software package.\u00a0 <\/span>This is a paid position that begins immediately and extends through December, 2012.<\/p>\n Reliable Wireless Communications<\/strong><\/p>\n Opportunities exist for students to investigate methods for encoding information to reduce the errors caused by noise in a mobile, wireless, digital communications channel. Students will learn about the important field of Error Control Coding and will design and evaluate actual codes for a real wireless application.<\/p>\n Optical Fiber Communications Simulation Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n A student is needed to use and evaluate a proposed simulation laboratory to be used in coursework on digital fiber optic communications systems.\u00a0 <\/span>The student will conduct and evaluate simulation experiments on the components of a fiber optic communications system and will help to design a comprehensive student project that uses these components. This is a two-semester, paid position.<\/p>\n Multiple Access Communications over Optical Fiber<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n In multiple access communications over wireless and fiber channels, many independent signals occupy the same bandwidth at the same time and in the same region of space.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The receiver can extract a single signal from the set of received signals by recognizing the unique code embedded in the signal.\u00a0 <\/span>Opportunities exist for students to analyze and evaluate encoding sequences in order to select those that provide the lowest bit error rate. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Students should be comfortable with mathematical methods and should have significant experience with Matlab.
