Students enrolled in the B.S. Program in
Materials Science & Engineering may pursue a combined B.S./M.S.E.
degree that can be completed in approximately five years. Application
for admission should be made no later than the spring semester of
the junior year, so as to fulfill all the requirements for
the B.S. as well as the M.S.E. degree in a timely and coordinated
manner. An applicant for the BS/MSE program must submit to
the Department’s Graduate Admissions Committee:
- completed graduate program application form
- statement of purpose
- two letters of recommendation
The student must be accepted into a research program
conducted by a full-time faculty member. For students who qualify
academically, the Whiting School of Engineering allows a half-tuition
waiver after the completion of eight semesters or having received
the bachelor of science degree.

A research project reported as a written essay
(see the dissertation/thesis instructions in the Academic Information
for Graduate Students in this catalog for additional information).
Instead of an essay, with the concurrence of the faculty advisor
a student may submit to the Graduate Program Committee an article
describing the research that has been published (or accepted for
publication) in an archival, peer-reviewed technical journal. The
student must be the primary author of the article. Upon review of
the manuscript, the Graduate Program Committee may accept it in
fulfillment of this requirement, or require the student to submit
a formal written essay if the manuscript is unacceptable.
After acceptance into the B.S./M.S.E.
degree program a student may take graduate level core courses and
600-level electives to satisfy remaining B.S. requirements. A portion
of these courses – 5 maximum - may be applied towards the
M.S.E. requirements. Only courses for which the student received
a grade of B- or better will be counted toward completion of the
M.S.E. course requirements, and an overall B average must be maintained.
