Ed Bouwer, Chair

"Here at the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering, through our work and research, we strive to exemplify a unique mentality of not only "thinking green", but "acting green" every day.

We face many environmental problems. Engineering designs and public decisions must rest upon a sound knowledge of fundamental scientific processes as well as economic policy and social science. While most people are familiar with the more glamorized aspects of what we do (chemical contaminants, bioremediation, risk analysis, sustainable energy, biofuels), most don't realize the crucial "behind-the-scenes" components of our work.

Many of us here work on water resources, water quality, and treatment processes. We work on keeping our water supply clean and usable, and helping to provide water to populations who need it. We determine if the soil under your feet and home is contaminating your water supply or posing a threat to the environment, and we help solve energy issues from a policy and supply point of view, with an eye for preserving our precious environment for our future.

Others in the department work on the modeling and analysis of public policy, including water resources management, energy distribution and markets, simulation of market responses to environmental policies, environmental justice and ethics, and integrated assessment of climate policy and impacts.

Still others in the department focus on the processes at the Earth's surface such as the hydrologic cycle, restoring streams, river dynamics, and historical records of the ecology in sediments.

There is so much variety in our research, and yet we are all working towards the same goal: improving the quality of human life across the globe while maintaining a sense of environmental responsibility.

Every day, we do our best to act green and not just think green."
