Mission
In 2003, the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) was established by the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) to develop educational and outreach programs directed towards underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). CEO's focus is to serve the entire Engineering School, the University, and the broader educational community as a resource to develop and tailor engineering education and outreach programs to encourage all students from Kindergarten through Graduate (K - G) school to pursue STEM studies and careers. The broader educational community includes K-12 schools, community colleges, four-year institutions including historically African American, Native American and Hispanic serving colleges and universities.
CEO programs are directed at:
- Integrating programs and participants across K - G to maximize the effectiveness and funding of CEO programs;
- Linking WSE to programs and institutions directed at increasing the number and quality of students pursuing STEM education and career pathways;
- Engagement of faculty in STEM teacher professional development;
- Engagement of faculty and graduate students in mentoring pre-college and undergraduate students;
- Development of engineering education and career pathways for underrepresented students in STEM disciplines;
- The retention of undergraduates in engineering and their pursuit of graduate level degrees in engineering;
- The development of informal education (after school activities) to encourage exploration of STEM learning and understandings.
