What is the Department of Mechanical Engineering?
The Whiting School’s Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) is a close-knit group of students and energetic faculty who work across disciplines in a research-intensive environment.
We combine science and engineering in new and innovative ways. ME undergrads study everything from robotics and human-machine interaction, micro- and nano-scale engineered devices, and aerospace and marine systems, to biology and medicine.
Our students also work one-on-one with faculty on research topics that range from remotely piloted deep-sea robots to the design of advanced medical equipment for minimally invasive microsurgery. These unique research experiences set our program apart from the rest and provide our students with skills not easily learned in the classroom.
As a senior here, you’ll take part in a two-semester design project. Working in teams of four, you’ll be given a budget to tackle a design problem provided by local industry, government, or a non-profit organization. Recent projects have included the design of an inexpensive, portable Braille-writer
and a custom computer desk made for a client with physical disabilities.
