The Student Initiatives Fund, established and funded by Hopkins engineering alumni and friends of the Whiting School, is designed to reward innovation and increase opportunities for engineering students to apply the skills they’ve honed in classrooms and labs and while also using their creativity and problem-solving abilities to pursue new areas of interest.
The types of projects that are envisioned to garner support from the fund are those that:
Applications are accepted twice a year — deadlines are November 15th and April 15th. Funding is awarded for projects conducted the following semester.
Previously Funded Projects Include:
The Baja group was awarded start-up funding to build an off-road, dune buggy style vehicle to compete in collegiate challenges.
The Student Initiatives Fund helped sponsor the initial EWB project, the creation of a basic irrigation system in a remote South African village.
This self-motivated design project stemmed from a group member's observation of current gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) diagnosis methods during a summer internship at the gastroenterology department of a hospital. When complete, the device will provide a comfortable and non-invasive method for the diagnosis of GERD, a common illness which affects over half of the general population.
The Virtual JHU GigaPixel Panorama Project is using a new field of large scale photographic technology known as "gigapixel imaging" to build a virtual representation of the City of Baltimore and the Hopkins campus that will allow home computer users to explore the area remotely and in great detail.
HUES was awarded funding to host an engineering student competition using VEX radio operated robotics kits. The VEX kits are reusable and HUES hopes to host the competition annually.
