Materials Science & Engineering Celebrates 30 Years

July 1, 2013

On July 1, 1983, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering was established, becoming a true distinct department at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to this date, the materials science discipline had been incorporated in either study or name in other academic departments within the School of Engineering. The late Professor Robert Pond, Sr., was instrumental in establishing the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. In the video below, he recounts his time in metallurgy and materials science.

Throughout the month of July, we will be sharing department facts and milestones in the department’s history on our website, Facebook, and Twitter. We will also be compiling this information to create a new “History” section for our website. Stay tuned for updates.
