The Whiting School of Engineering encourages students to use their skills and expertise for the betterment of society.
Two student groups that address these issues at the international level are the Johns Hopkins chapters of Engineers without Borders and Engineers for a Sustainable World.
The mission of Engineers Without Borders - USA (EWB-USA) is to partner with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects while developing internationally responsible engineering students.
In the summer of 2006, the JHU chapter of EWB-USA completed on a water supply project in Kwazulu-Natal province in eastern South Africa and is now working on similar projects in Equador and Guatemala.

Recently launched at the Whiting School is a chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World, a group dedicated to promoting engineering for sustainable development among students and the engineering community and providing service to communities in the US and abroad.
On behalf of her company, Susan Carter SAIS '83, Federal Advisor, Exxon Mobil, presents Nicholas P. Jones, Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering, a check representing the corporate match of all gifts made this year to Johns Hopkins by alumni who are retirees or employees of Exxon Mobil.
