Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders…
For Baltimore and Beyond

“Baltimore is Johns Hopkins' home, and the city's future is our future.”
-William Brody, President of Johns Hopkins University

A Johns Hopkins Education: Within Reach for Baltimore City
Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 for the purpose of expanding knowledge and putting that knowledge to work for the good of humanity. Since its founding, the university has produced generations of business leaders, philanthropists, scholars, scientists, physicians, and artists who have contributed greatly to Baltimore and to the nation’s prosperity. As a world-renowned leader in research and education, Johns Hopkins is one of the region’s most valuable assets.

While many of Baltimore’s citizens—including legions of Johns Hopkins graduates—have contributed to the university’s successes, some of the city’s brightest young minds have not always had this opportunity.

In the past, many of Baltimore’s top public high school students, lacking the necessary financial means, guidance, or encouragement, did not even consider applying to Johns Hopkins. Although these students had the potential to make valuable contributions to our academic community and Baltimore’s future, they believed a Johns Hopkins education was out of their reach. As a result, these students chose to attend college elsewhere, depleting the city and university of intellectual capital now and for years to come.

In 2004, the university established the Baltimore Scholars Program, a bold new initiative designed to address this problem and allow Baltimore’s most gifted young students, regardless of their financial means, the opportunity to attend Johns Hopkins and receive a world-class education.

The Baltimore Scholars Program: Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders
Educating for leadership—it’s a mission that is shared by Johns Hopkins’ Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering.

The Baltimore Scholars Program fosters the development of future leaders and ensures the region’s economic and cultural vitality by providing our most promising young citizens with a powerful incentive to stay in a city that needs them: full tuition, four-year scholarships to Johns Hopkins University.

Through this ongoing initiative, all Baltimore City students who have been enrolled in a city public high school for three years, graduate from a city high school, and qualify for and are offered admission to Johns Hopkins University are awarded these scholarships. Depending on their need, Baltimore Scholars may also be eligible for additional financial support to cover other educational and living expenses.

Provided with the tools and incentives to achieve excellence, these highly educated and committed students then graduate from Johns Hopkins with the creative vision, professional and leadership skills, ethics, and wisdom to contribute to Baltimore’s prosperity.

Investing in Our City’s Future: Investing in the Best
Recognizing that the strength of the university is tied to the strength of our community, Johns Hopkins already engages in a number of successful partnerships with the city, including programs that provide health services to disadvantaged communities and after-school tutoring to elementary school students.

The Baltimore Scholars Program is an extension of these outreach efforts and provides critical support to some of Baltimore’s most deserving students. Since its inception, the program has been a huge success. Now, if we are to maintain and expand its reach, we need your help.

Partnering with Johns Hopkins in this important endeavor gives you an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of these students and further strengthen our community. You can share our commitment to Baltimore and our optimism for the city’s future by helping us bridge the gap that stands between our city’s best students and a world-class education.
As a Baltimore Scholars sponsor, you will provide some of the city’s brightest young minds with access to resources—research labs, world-renowned faculty, library collections, and athletic facilities—that are second to none. You will give these students the opportunities and tools they need to succeed in college and beyond.
With your support, the Baltimore Scholars Program can create the critical mass of highly educated and motivated individuals with strong ties to the community and the skills and knowledge needed to successfully lead the city through the 21st century.
You can make a significant impact on Baltimore’s future by investing in its future leaders.

"By supporting these students, they get to know us instead of one of our competitors. If they decide to stay and become full time employees, it’s icing on the cake," says Ian MacFarlane, President and CEO of EA Engineering, Science, and Technology.
