Prospective Graduate Student Admission Information

Applications require submission of the following items:

1. Completed application form
2. Statement of Purpose
3. Three letters of recommendation
4. GRE scores (generally, our minimums are 550 Verbal and 650 Quantitative)
5. TOEFL or IELT scores if applicable (generally, our minimums are IBT 115, CBT 250, PB 600)
6. Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended

Foreign applications should submit their scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. A minimum score of 600 (paper based) or 250 (computer based) is required for admission. The department code for GRE scores is 1103 and for TOEFL scores is 70. Completed applications should be filed by January 15 to be considered for financial aid and assistantships . It is important that GRE and TOEFL scores and letters of recommendation be available at this time. Successful applicants will be advised of their admission and financial aid status by mid-March. For applicants with severe financial constraints (e.g., limited family income), it is possible to make a formal request for the application fee to be waived. You must document your financial resources and explain the need for the application fee waiver. You can send such a request to the DoGEE Senior Academic Program Coordinator: Christine Kavanagh.

MSE Funding Opportunities

9-month 50% tuition fellowships are often available for well-qualified students who enroll in the MS and MSE degree programs. These are awarded on the basis of normal application forms -- no special application is required.

For U.S. citizens who are interested in a terminal course-based MSE degree toward professional practice in environmental engineering, three special funding opportunities are available to especially well-qualified applicants:

1) For especially well qualified students, a full tuition fellowship is available on a competitive basis.Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of the normal graduate application, so no special application procedures are required.

2) A fellowship/internship program is available through a collaborative program established by JHU and EA Engineering, Science & Technology, Inc. This program provides full tuition plus a $5000 stipend. It involves a 9-month program of course work followed by 6 months of internship with EA Engineering. Selection is based on the normal JHU application for MSE study in environmental engineering within the Dept. of Geography and Environmental Engineering. No special application is required, but interested applicants are encouraged to so note within their application and/or to separately contact the department.

3) A consortium of water suppliers and environmental engineering consulting firms offers up to $20,000 toward MSE study for students who are willing to make a three-year commitment of employment with the sponsoring firm. Graduate Fellowship Opportunities

The Whiting School of Engineering and the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering offer a limited number of partial and complete doctoral fellowships on a competitive basis, selected on the basis of qualifications presented on the normal application form. No special application is required.
In addition, there are several national programs that offer full fellowships for graduate study of U.S. citizens in environmental engineering. These include the EPA, NSF, and GEM graduate fellowship programs, for which further information can be found through the following links:

Graduate Research Assistantships

Research Assistantships are awarded at the discretion of the individual faculty and are strongly dependent on the availability of funding from various research sponsors, including federal and state agencies as well as non-governmental organizations and foundations. Such awards are most often awarded preferentially to students who apply for the PhD, and these are typically decided well after the January 15 deadline, on the basis of comparative study of fully complete applications. All faculty with research interests that fall within an applicant's stated area of interest will be given opportunity to review the graduate study application, so no special action or advanced communication is required on the part of the applicant. All applicants should,however, be sure to indicate any faculty preferences in their Statement of Interests, and applicants should feel free to establish preliminary c ontact with faculty if they wish to confirm alignment of research interests. Students bringing fellowship funding from external organizations are encouraged to make preliminary contact in order to establish a working relationship with faculty on the research topic of interest. Finally, all applicants are welcome to visit the department, provided that they can make arrangments at least two weeks in advance. (Note: Some applicants who are selected for possible financial support will be given an opportunity for a financially supported visit in early March.)
